Does the human body actually have fat?
The yellow tissue in these two MRI images is fat. In the obese individual on the left, note how the white fat in the abdominal cavity pushes up on the liver (orange), which crowds the right lung (black space). This is one reason obesity causes shortness of breath, reduced blood oxygenation, and more sense of fatigue.
(Note: When I selected these images for my textbook, I was unable to find any height, weight, or BMI values for the person on the right. I included in the legend only the information that I could verify. I regret the lack of comparative data, but I wasn’t going to just make something up.)
