Every time I see this image, I’m left speechless.
Why?
Because inside this drop of amber is a mantis that lived... 30 million years ago.
Yes, you read that right: 30 million.
A tiny creature, trapped in resin and turned into a kind of time capsule.
Today, we look at it as if it’s staring back at us from the past.
It was the Oligocene epoch. The world was different, almost alien.
And yet, there she is—recognizable, almost familiar.
The amber comes from the Dominican Republic and measures less than 3 cm.
In 2016, it was auctioned off for $6,000.
A relatively small sum, if you consider that it holds a fragment of eternity.
Scientists analyzing the resin discovered that it came from a plant called Hymenaea protera, an ancient legume.
This mantis died prematurely... but in a way, she became immortal.
Ambers are true treasure chests of time.
They allow us to observe ancient creatures in an incredible state of preservation.
Isn’t it wonderful?
