Death. Not the usual fears. The fear of no time. A man knows this fear well--Men like Socrates thought of it thousands of years ago. Men think of it today. The dilemma is the same. It is the one true trap. A man is an animal, and the animal instinct is to live. But a man has a mind that sees time, and he knows his own time will run out. His mind knows his body will die. This is the conflict. A mind that wants to exist forever is locked inside a body that will not. Psychologists call this Terror Management Theory. They say this conflict is the root of many things. We build cultures and seek legacies to feel like a part of something that will not die. We do this to manage the fear. But a man cannot escape the knowledge itself, it is the human condition. All men must die. The ones who come to peace with this. They live an easier life.
