Which Nazi organization was most responsible for the planning and execution of the Holocaust and other atrocities?
The SS (Schutzstaffel) was the major group of Nazis involved in Holocaust. They are the organization which gave Fascist ideologies of Hitler a practical reality in the form of the Nazism.
The SS was initially a small guard unit. However, it evolved under Heinrich Himmler who led it to become one of the strongest parameters in Nazi Germany. Himmler was even delegated absolute powers to execute the policy of extermination of the Europe Jews, and he established the machinery to accomplish this.
The SS ordered all aspects of killing. They operated all death and concentration camps such as Auschwitz. They constructed the gas chambers, and established the day to day schedule of systematic murder. Out of the camps, they had formed mobile killing units called the Einsatzgruppen. These teams of murderers would move through the towns, and grabbing Jewish men, women and children, would shoot them dead where they stood.
The other sections of the Nazi state and army were assistive but the SS impelled it. They were not common soldiers but they were fanatics who gave their full attention to the rules issued by Hitler. Following the end of the war, SS was deemed a criminal organisation under the reasoning that it was central in organising and perpetrating the Holocaust.
