Why can't humans directly control their internal organs?

A human cannot be trusted with the engine of their own life. The mind is a fickle thing. It gets distracted, it sleeps. It forgets.

Imagine having to think to beat your own heart--A moment of distraction, a deep sleep, a sudden fright, and the rhythm is broken. You would be dead before the first sunrise. Evolution learned this truth. It built a wall between the thinking human and the living machine--It created the autonomic nervous system, a separate government that runs the country of the body without asking for your vote. It handles the heart, the lungs, the gut. This frees the conscious mind for the important work: to find food, to fight, to build--You do not control your organs because if you did, you would not survive the day.
