Meningitis: A Dangerous Disease That Can Be Mistaken for a Common Fever
When we feel sick, we often think it’s just a simple cold, fever, or headache. But there are some diseases that may seem common but are actually very dangerous. Meningitis is one of them.
What is Meningitis?
Our brain and spinal cord are surrounded by a thin membrane called the meninges. When this membrane becomes infected with germs, it causes the disease known as meningitis.
Why is it Mistaken for a Common Fever?
In its early stages, the symptoms of meningitis can resemble a regular illness, such as:
Fever
Headache
Vomiting or nausea
Weakness
Because of these symptoms, many people take it lightly, thinking, "It's nothing, maybe just a cold." But this mistake can lead to serious consequences later on.
Symptoms to Be Cautious About
Over time, meningitis can take a much more dangerous form. Some of the more serious symptoms are:
Stiff neck, making it difficult to move
Pain in the eyes from light (photophobia)
Dizziness or feeling lightheaded
Confusion
Sometimes, seizures or loss of consciousness
In children, symptoms can include non-stop crying, refusal to eat, and a limp, lethargic body.
How Does This Disease Occur?
Meningitis can be caused by different types of germs:
Bacteria: This is the most severe type of meningitis. If not treated quickly, it can be fatal.
Viruses: This is generally less dangerous than bacterial meningitis, but it should not be ignored.
Fungi: This type is mostly seen in people with weakened immune systems.
Why Is Meningitis So Dangerous?
A delay in treatment can have severe consequences:
Permanent brain damage
Hearing loss (deafness)
Recurrent seizures
Even death
Ways to Prevent It
Get vaccinated for meningitis in a timely manner (e.g., meningococcal, HiB vaccines).
Maintain personal hygiene.
Be careful if you have been in contact with an infected person.
And most importantly—if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, do not delay and see a doctor immediately.
