No, pain is a result of evolution. Pain didn’t occur until a creature with a nervous system emerged.

So from 4 billion years to around until the first nervous system evolved around 635 million years ago, evolution was pain free. That’s 3.3 billion years of pain free existence.

The creatures that survive best and get more offspring will eventually saturate the population with their version of genes. Pain is an indication that the affected part of a creature is being damaged. Thus, pain has great survival value for all beings, in that they will evolve to avoid pain when it happens, and thus avoid being damaged.

Of course, the first creatures just registered damage. The feeling of pain is very human centric, but it can be surmised that all animals when damaged behaves as if they feel pain.

Even simple nematodes with just a few hundred neurons tries to avoid being damaged.
