Why are gorillas so big and strong? Their environment doesn't seem to require it. No predators, herbivorous, why have they evolved so powerful?
Male gorillas are strong because it’s only the dominant silverback male that can mate. To become the dominant one, it has to scare off, fight off, or subdue any other aspiring males. The dominant male has to defend its harem of adult females from other males by force.
Only the strongest males can pass their genes to the next generation, which is an example of natural selection favoring strength in males.
Many other animals with this type of setup also get very strong males. The females are usually much smaller, since they don’t need to be very strong.
